Digistump Oak

The Oak board is the last generation of boards from Digistump, successfully funded through a Kickstarter campaign last May 2015.

The Oak features a standard ESP8266 but brings the Particle protocol for services, including online IDE, over-the-air update, functions and dashboard.

The USD10 would make the Oak board a very serious contender on the IoT arena, should it work as expected.

Hardware

The Oak connectors are compatible with the shields designed for the Digispark.

The board comes with the connectors tone soldered.

Software

The Oak can be programmed using either the Particle web IDE or the Arduino IDE with the Boards Manager. For the moment, only the Arduino is available.

Unfortunately, I'm facing issues with the installation. Despite the detailed procedure and the automatic setting page, the Oak just doesn't connect to my LAN.

Pins Map

Digistump provides the pins map for the board with the SPI, I²C and Serial ports.

Conclusion

The software is no longer in beta but still fails.

After my multiple failed attempts with previous beta releases, I gave a fresh and new try with the first stable release numbered 1.0.0 available since March 13th, 2016. I went through the factory reset and the first time connection procedures.

The board did connect to my LAN but the recommended sketch failed to upload.

An informal poll on the forum suggests only 38% of users but 24% of the boards succeed. One user can own multiple boards and the WiFi router seems critical in the process.

I can hardly recommend this board for the moment. Good luck to the developers to deliver a successful and smooth experience!
