CC2650 BLE BoosterPack

The CC2650 BoosterPack is a great add-on for IoT projects. The CC2650 integrates a Cortex-M3 MCU with the BLE radio.

Communication between the CC2650 and the MCU is carried out through SPI or UART with high-level commands, with the BLE stack managed by the CC2650.

For Energia users, the
BLE library for Energia works with both the CC2650 LaunchPad and the CC2650 BoosterPack. Just follow the installation procedure.

However, it requires RTOS or Energia MT, limiting the list of compatible boards. The firmware can be updated using an external programmer connected to the 2 x 5 0.05" header.

This BoosterPack shares the same CC2650 with the CC2650 LaunchPad.

Unfortunately, because the BLE stack isn't open source, Energia can't support the CC2650 LaunchPad.

Texas Instruments provides training on BLE with
Bluetooth low energy Basics and Bluetooth low energy Custom Profile, plus an Introduction to Simple Application Processor + Simple Network Processor.

Update the CC2650 Flash

To update the CC2650 flash,
  • Download the BLE-Stack package, which contains the simple_np_cc2650bp_uart_pm_xsbl.hex image.
  • Be sure to select the right image with bp for  BoosterPack, uart for serial, pm for hardware handshake and xsbl for no serial bootloader.
  • Use a MSP432 LaunchPad as programmer. Remove all the jumpers except 3V3 and GND, and connect the 2 x 5 SWD cable from the XDS110 Out connector on the MSP432 to the JTAG connector on the CC2650 BoosterPack.
  • Finally, use the Uniflash v.4.3.1 application.
